Cariprazine: Uses, Safety and Drug Interactions
Cariprazine: uses, safety and drug interactions
Overview: Cariprazine is an oral atypical antipsychotic. It is the active ingredient rather than a promise that every country sells the same brand, strength or formulation. Its active metabolites remain in the body for a long time, so changes in benefit and adverse effects can continue to develop for several weeks after a treatment change.
Uses and formulation: Approved uses differ by country. The UK Reagila label covers schizophrenia in adults. The December 2025 US Vraylar label also covers schizophrenia from age 13, manic or mixed bipolar I episodes from age 10, and adult bipolar depression and adjunctive treatment of major depressive disorder. These US indications do not automatically apply to a UK or Turkish product.
Safety: Restlessness and movement symptoms are common reasons for monitoring. Fever with severe muscle stiffness or confusion needs urgent assessment. Weight, glucose and blood pressure may require checks. UK advice includes avoiding pregnancy during treatment and for at least ten weeks afterwards, and stopping breastfeeding during treatment. Do not abruptly change your own treatment plan.
Drug interactions: The UK label prohibits strong CYP3A4 inhibitors and strong or moderate CYP3A4 inducers. Moderate inhibitors require monitoring and sometimes a clinician-directed dose change rather than an automatic prohibition. Other centrally acting medicines and alcohol need caution. A pharmacist should check the actual product and full medication list, including recently stopped medicines, because interaction effects may be delayed.
