Dicyclomine: Uses, Safety and Drug Interactions

Dicyclomine: uses, safety and drug interactions

Overview: Dicyclomine, also called dicycloverine, is an antispasmodic with antimuscarinic activity. It reduces intestinal smooth-muscle spasm. The reference for this page is a United States oral capsule label; an injection or another formulation must not be assumed to have an identical administration plan.

Uses and formulation: The oral product treats functional bowel disorders and irritable bowel syndrome, rather than unexplained abdominal pain generally. The US label requires prescriber review if benefit is absent after two weeks or adverse effects prevent the required regimen. Safety data for more than 80 mg daily beyond two weeks are not documented. These limits are not instructions to raise a dose or stop treatment yourself.

Safety: Common problems include dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision, nausea and sleepiness. Serious concerns include heat illness from reduced sweating, urinary retention and intestinal obstruction. Glaucoma, myasthenia gravis, severe ulcerative colitis and several obstructive conditions are contraindications. Use while breastfeeding is contraindicated. Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established; infants younger than six months must not receive it.

Drug interactions: Other anticholinergic medicines can increase adverse effects. The label also flags benzodiazepines, certain antidepressants, nitrates, sympathomimetics and other drug groups for review. Dicyclomine can oppose metoclopramide, while antacids can interfere with its absorption. Tell a pharmacist about all medicines and supplements. Seek urgent assessment for severe confusion, overheating, inability to urinate or worsening abdominal swelling.
