Ozempic (semaglutide) Injection: Uses, Safety and Interactions

What this Ozempic page covers

Ozempic contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. This page concerns the 1 mg-per-dose injectable pen in the linked medicine record. It is given under the skin; the stated pen strength is not a recommendation to start treatment at that dose. Oral semaglutide tablets and other injectable brands have different instructions and must not be substituted without professional review.

The EU authorisation covers adults whose type 2 diabetes is insufficiently controlled, alongside diet and exercise. The US label additionally specifies cardiovascular risk reduction in adults with established cardiovascular disease and kidney-related risk reduction in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease. These are defined clinical populations, not promises of protection for everyone. Ozempic is not a replacement for insulin in type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

Side effects and symptoms requiring help

Nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting are common. Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea can cause dehydration and worsen kidney function. Severe, continuing abdominal pain needs urgent assessment for pancreatitis; gallbladder symptoms and severe allergic reactions also require prompt attention. People with diabetic eye disease may need closer monitoring. Current EU information identifies NAION, a very rare optic-nerve disorder: sudden loss of vision or rapidly worsening eyesight needs immediate medical assessment.

Interactions and practical precautions

Insulin and sulfonylureas can increase the chance of low blood glucose when combined with semaglutide; any adjustment belongs to the prescriber. Delayed stomach emptying can affect the handling of oral medicines, so a pharmacist should check the full list rather than assuming every combination is harmless. Tell the anaesthesia team before procedures because retained stomach contents can increase aspiration risk. Never share an injection pen, even after changing its needle.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and regional rules

The EU information advises against use during pregnancy and breastfeeding and recommends stopping semaglutide at least two months before a planned pregnancy, with a clinician arranging suitable treatment. The US label contraindicates Ozempic in people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2. This warning reflects animal findings; it does not establish that semaglutide causes this cancer in humans.
