Quetiapine fumarate (Seroquel XR 200 mg) and Alprazolam (Xanax XR 1 mg): interaction and safety

This source-based reference is not a personal treatment recommendation. The relevance and management of an interaction depend on the exact products, route, dose and clinical situation.

Interaction mechanism

Quetiapine extended-release and alprazolam extended-release can have additive CNS effects; quetiapine can also cause postural hypotension.

Clinical significance and safety

Seroquel XR (quetiapine extended-release) and Xanax XR (alprazolam extended-release) may increase drowsiness, impaired coordination and falls. Quetiapine-related postural hypotension can add to dizziness or fainting. Their labels call for caution with centrally acting medicines; this is not a pair-specific clinical-trial estimate or proof that every supervised combination is prohibited. A prescriber or pharmacist should review the full medicine list and driving safety. Avoid alcohol, and seek urgent help for severe difficulty waking or slow breathing. Do not stop a regularly used benzodiazepine abruptly.

Using this information

This is a source-based reference record, not a recommendation to combine, stop or change medicines. A missing interaction record does not establish safe use. A qualified healthcare professional should consider the exact products, doses, other medicines and individual health circumstances.
