It is an SGLT2 inhibitor that increases the amount of glucose passed in urine. Current EU and UK product information includes type 2 diabetes in adults and children aged 10 years and older, with diet and exercise. It also includes symptomatic chronic heart failure and chronic kidney disease in adults. These heart and kidney uses are not restricted to people who also have diabetes.

Kidney function and common problems

The glucose-lowering effect becomes weaker as kidney function declines, but that is not the same as the evidence for heart or kidney outcomes. Eligibility and monitoring depend on the indication and the individual clinical situation. Do not infer a suitable dose from this overview. Genital fungal infection, urinary infection and increased urination can occur. Fluid loss may cause thirst, dizziness or low blood pressure. A urine glucose result may remain positive because of the medicine rather than poor treatment response.

Urgent warnings and illness planning

Forxiga must not be used to treat type 1 diabetes. Ketoacidosis is a potentially life-threatening risk and can present without a very high glucose reading. New vomiting, abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, confusion or marked sleepiness need urgent assessment. Ask the care team for instructions before major surgery and during acute serious illness or dehydration. Pain or swelling around the genitals or perineum with fever needs urgent attention because a rare destructive infection has been reported with this medicine group.

Interactions, pregnancy and breastfeeding

Diuretics may add to water loss and blood-pressure reduction. Combining dapagliflozin with insulin or a sulfonylurea can increase hypoglycaemia risk, so the prescriber may need to review the regimen. Dapagliflozin may lower lithium concentrations; extra lithium measurements can be necessary after starting or changing it. The reviewed information advises stopping dapagliflozin when pregnancy is detected and avoiding it during breastfeeding. Contact the treating clinician promptly for an alternative plan rather than leaving diabetes or heart disease untreated. Brand availability, authorisations and clinical instructions vary between countries.

Sources

Forxiga — EU product information, dapagliflozin 5 mg and 10 mg tablets — Current English EU SmPC and package leaflet accessed 30 October 2026

Forxiga 10 mg film-coated tablets — UK SmPC — AstraZeneca; text revision 10 July 2026; accessed 30 October 2026

Source check: 30 October 2026.
