It permits treatment alone or alongside other seizure medicines in adults and children aged six or older. This page concerns oral tablets, not an assumption that all formulations or national licences are identical.

Common effects and important warnings

Dizziness, sleepiness, double vision, nausea and fatigue are common. Driving and other tasks needing clear vision or balance may be affected. Low blood sodium is an important risk, especially with sodium-lowering medicines. Significant confusion, unusual drowsiness or worsening seizures warrants prompt assessment.

Serious skin reactions and systemic allergy can occur. A spreading or blistering rash, mouth sores, facial swelling or breathing difficulty needs urgent medical help. Prior carbamazepine allergy should be disclosed. Do not create a treatment gap or restart after a serious reaction without specialist assessment.

Interaction and contraception checks

Oxcarbazepine can reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives. Discuss a reliable additional non-hormonal method with the prescriber. It can also lower some medicine concentrations through enzyme induction, while phenytoin concentrations can rise under certain dosing conditions. Other seizure medicines, transplant medicines, diuretics and alcohol therefore belong in the interaction review.

Pregnancy needs a continuing seizure-control plan

The MHRA safety review describes uncertainty around several pregnancy risks for oxcarbazepine rather than proof that it is risk-free. Both medicine exposure and untreated epilepsy need to be considered. Anyone planning pregnancy, or who may already be pregnant, should seek prompt specialist advice and should not stop seizure treatment without discussing it with their doctor.

The MHRA also notes that levels of the active metabolite can fall during pregnancy, potentially affecting seizure control. The clinical team may consider blood-level monitoring and reassessment after birth. These are professional monitoring decisions, not a schedule that can be copied between patients.

Bring the medicine packaging and a record of seizure changes, suspected adverse effects and all other medicines to the review. Ask which symptoms require urgent contact and how to obtain advice if a dose is missed or vomiting prevents normal use. This page does not supply a dose or a withdrawal plan.

Sources and scope

Oxcarbazepine Umedica 600 mg tablets: UK SmPC — Umedica; text revised 3 August 2026

MHRA: Antiepileptic medicines and pregnancy safety review — MHRA Drug Safety Update 7 January 2021; post-publication notes through June 2024

Sources checked: 30 October 2026.
