Ropinirole: Uses, Safety and Drug Interactions
Ropinirole: uses, safety and drug interactions
Overview: Ropinirole is a dopamine agonist. The reviewed US information for immediate-release oral tablets includes Parkinson’s disease and moderate-to-severe primary restless legs syndrome. These conditions use different treatment schedules. An immediate-release tablet and an extended-release product must not be exchanged simply because their ingredient name is the same.
Uses and formulation: A clinician adjusts treatment gradually according to benefit and unwanted effects. Significant interruptions may require a revised restart plan. Do not stop ropinirole abruptly or change the dose independently. When used with levodopa in Parkinson’s disease, movement-related effects and hallucinations may need additional assessment. Children are not an established treatment population in the reviewed label.
Safety: Nausea, dizziness, sleepiness, vomiting or swelling can occur. Sudden sleep during ordinary activities can happen without an obvious warning. Do not drive if this occurs; contact the prescriber promptly. Fainting, severe confusion or new compulsive behaviours also need attention. In restless legs syndrome, symptoms that start earlier in the day or spread to other body areas may represent augmentation rather than a need to take more tablets.
Drug interactions: Ciprofloxacin and other strong CYP1A2 inhibitors can increase ropinirole exposure, while dopamine-blocking medicines such as metoclopramide may reduce its effect. Sedating medicines and alcohol can add to sleepiness. Starting or stopping smoking may also change clearance. Pregnancy and breastfeeding require individual review, and ropinirole can suppress milk production. Bring all medicines and relevant lifestyle changes to the clinician’s attention.
