Xanax (Alprazolam): Uses, Dependence and Interaction Safety
What Xanax 0.5 mg is used for
Xanax 0.5 mg is an immediate-release oral tablet containing alprazolam, a benzodiazepine. The reviewed UK product is licensed for short-term treatment of severe anxiety in adults. The US tablet label also includes adult panic disorder and acute treatment of generalised anxiety disorder. These indications should not be assumed to apply in every country. This profile concerns the standard tablet, rather than Xanax XR or a sublingual preparation.
Everyday safety and treatment review
Sleepiness, poor coordination, dizziness and impaired memory can affect driving, work and balance. Older adults may be especially sensitive. The UK label lists important restrictions for sleep apnoea, severe breathing or liver problems and myasthenia gravis. A prescriber should review the continuing need for treatment. Feeling less benefit over time is a reason for review, rather than increasing the dose independently or using somebody else's tablets.
Alcohol and medicine interactions
Opioid pain medicines can combine with alprazolam to cause profound sedation, dangerously slow breathing, coma or death. Do not drink alcohol during treatment; other sedating medicines can add to impairment. Strong CYP3A inhibitors, including itraconazole, ketoconazole and clarithromycin, can greatly increase alprazolam exposure. The US label contraindicates these combinations, with a separate exception and specific management instructions for ritonavir. Ritonavir has a complex, time-dependent interaction requiring a professional plan. A pharmacist should review prescription medicines, non-prescription sleep products and supplements before any combination is started.
Dependence, pregnancy and urgent symptoms
Physical dependence and withdrawal can develop even during prescribed use; this is not the same as addiction. Abrupt stopping or rapid reduction after continued use can cause severe withdrawal, including seizures. Any reduction needs a personalised plan from the treating clinician; this page provides no taper schedule. Pregnancy and breastfeeding require an individual assessment. Late-pregnancy exposure may cause newborn sedation or withdrawal, and the US label advises against breastfeeding during treatment. Slow or shallow breathing, inability to wake normally, collapse or a seizure require emergency assessment. New severe agitation or unusual behavioural changes also need prompt medical attention.
