Lyrica (Pregabalin): Uses, Side Effects and Interaction Safety

Uses and the formulation covered

Lyrica 75 mg contains pregabalin in an oral hard capsule. Under the reviewed UK label, it treats peripheral or central neuropathic pain and generalised anxiety disorder in adults, and is an add-on treatment for adult partial seizures. US approvals differ and also include fibromyalgia and specified nerve-pain conditions. The capsule should not be confused with a prolonged-release pregabalin product. A diagnosis of nerve pain does not establish that every painful condition will respond.

Common effects and practical precautions

Dizziness and sleepiness are prominent effects. Blurred vision, weight gain, dry mouth and swelling of the limbs may also occur. These can affect walking, driving and tasks that need concentration. Kidney function influences pregabalin clearance, so the prescribed regimen requires review in kidney impairment and in some older adults. Tell the prescriber about heart failure or troublesome swelling. New or worsening mood symptoms need attention rather than being dismissed as part of the original illness.

Interactions, breathing and withdrawal

Opioids, benzodiazepines, alcohol and other medicines that depress the central nervous system can increase sedation and impair breathing. Serious respiratory depression is especially relevant with sedating combinations or an existing breathing disorder. Pregabalin has relatively few metabolic interactions, but that does not make these combinations harmless. The complete medicine list should be checked. Dependence, misuse and withdrawal are recognised risks, including during therapeutic use. Sudden stopping can cause withdrawal symptoms or increase seizures; any change should follow a clinician-led plan.

Pregnancy and when to seek help

Discuss pregnancy plans before treatment. The UK label requires effective contraception and warns that observational pregnancy data raise concern about major birth defects; use during pregnancy requires a clear benefit-risk assessment. Pregabalin enters breast milk, so infant feeding and treatment should be discussed individually. Swelling of the face, tongue or throat, breathing difficulty, severe skin reactions, extreme drowsiness or inability to wake normally require urgent assessment. Do not assume that a previously tolerated dose remains suitable after kidney function or other medicines change.
