Glycopyrrolate: Uses, Safety and Drug Interactions
Glycopyrrolate: uses, safety and drug interactions
Overview: Glycopyrrolate is also known as glycopyrronium bromide. It blocks muscarinic effects and reduces gastrointestinal movement and secretions. This page uses the United States oral tablet prescribing information. An inhaler, injection or paediatric oral solution has a different product-specific indication and must not be substituted on the basis of the ingredient name alone.
Uses and formulation: The referenced tablets are used in adults as an addition to peptic-ulcer treatment to reduce symptoms. They are not a stand-alone ulcer-healing treatment. The evidence for these tablets should not be presented as approval for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or for every form of excessive salivation. The prescriber chooses the formulation and treatment plan.
Safety: Dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, reduced sweating, drowsiness and difficulty passing urine may occur. Glaucoma, urinary or intestinal obstruction, significant motility disorders, bleeding gastrointestinal ulcer and myasthenia gravis are among the contraindications. The United States label does not recommend these tablets in older people. Evidence for oral use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is limited; milk production may be reduced.
Drug interactions: Combining anticholinergic medicines can increase toxicity. Other medicines that slow intestinal movement require review, and solid oral potassium chloride products can increase gastrointestinal injury risk. Ask a pharmacist to review the complete medicine list. Eye pain, inability to urinate, marked abdominal swelling or overheating with reduced sweating needs prompt medical assessment.
