Avanafil: Uses, Interactions and Safety
Uses
Avanafil is a prescription medicine for erectile dysfunction in adult men. It blocks PDE5 and supports an erection in response to sexual stimulation. It does not treat the underlying causes of erectile dysfunction or prevent sexually transmitted infections. The Turkish endocrine society guideline discusses avanafil but lists it as unavailable in Turkey in its 2025 edition; this page does not establish Turkish marketing approval.
Administration
Avanafil tablets are taken by mouth according to the prescription and may be taken with or without food. The timing depends on the prescribed strength and product information. Do not take additional doses or combine erectile-dysfunction treatments because the first attempt was unsuccessful.
Safety
Sexual activity may be unsafe with some cardiovascular conditions, which should be assessed before treatment. Severe kidney or liver impairment requires avoiding the US product. An erection lasting more than four hours, sudden loss of vision or hearing, chest pain or fainting needs urgent medical attention. Tell emergency staff about avanafil and when it was taken.
Interactions
Nitrates must not be used with avanafil because blood pressure can fall dangerously. The US STENDRA label also contraindicates guanylate cyclase stimulators, explicitly including riociguat and vericiguat. Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ritonavir, itraconazole and clarithromycin must not be combined. Moderate inhibitors, including fluconazole, diltiazem and verapamil, require a prescriber to limit treatment. Alpha-blockers and antihypertensives can increase dizziness or fainting. Substantial alcohol consumption further increases orthostatic symptoms. Enzyme-inducing medicines can reduce exposure, and combination is not recommended.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Avanafil is not indicated for women, including during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Adverse effects
Headache, flushing, nasal congestion, cold-like symptoms and back pain occur. Report persistent adverse effects. Do not interpret the absence of symptoms as permission to combine an interacting medicine.
