Ubrogepant

What is ubrogepant used for?

Ubrogepant is an oral CGRP receptor antagonist used for an acute migraine attack in adults, with or without aura. The US UBRELVY label does not establish it as a preventive treatment. Its purpose therefore differs from a daily preventive medicine, even when both medicines belong to the broader CGRP treatment family. The prescriber should explain which medicine is intended for an attack and which, if any, is intended for prevention.

Check the exact product and plan

This page concerns the UBRELVY tablet reference formulation. It does not imply that all migraine products, strengths or formulations are interchangeable. Follow the prescription and patient leaflet rather than borrowing a schedule from another gepant. If the expected treatment effect changes, discuss the pattern with a clinician instead of repeatedly adding extra doses or another migraine product.

Important interaction distinctions

Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors are contraindicated because they can markedly increase ubrogepant exposure. Other enzyme inhibitors may require a modified regimen rather than complete avoidance. Strong CYP3A4 inducers should be avoided because they can make treatment less effective; moderate or weak inducers have different label instructions. BCRP or P-glycoprotein inhibitors can also matter. These categories are not interchangeable, and an interaction recommendation for rimegepant or atogepant should not automatically be applied to ubrogepant.

Side effects and when to seek assessment

Nausea, sleepiness and dry mouth are among the common adverse reactions. Severe allergic reactions can include breathing difficulty, throat or facial swelling and widespread rash, including delayed reactions. Current labeling also includes new or worsening hypertension and Raynaud-type symptoms. Cold, painful or discolored fingers and toes should be discussed promptly. Sudden neurological symptoms that are unusual for a person’s established migraine pattern require assessment rather than being assumed to be an ordinary attack.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and organ function

Human pregnancy information is insufficient to define risk. A small lactation study found low transfer into milk, but infant outcomes and effects on milk production remain uncertain. Severe kidney or liver impairment can change the prescribed regimen, and use is avoided in end-stage kidney disease under the US label. Tell the prescriber about these conditions and any new antibiotic, antiviral or antifungal treatment. This source-based English summary is not a personal suitability or dosing assessment; the complete local product information remains important.
